Representatives from industry, trade associations, and the Canadian government gathered at Vancouver&#8217;s Exhibition &amp; Conference Centre to share the latest on building out the hydrogeneconomy in British Columbia and across Canada. (HANNOVER, 18 April 2023) REFIRE, the world&#8217;s leading deployer of commercial hydrogen fuel cell technologies, presented PRISMA XXII, the company’s most powerful-to-date fuel cell system at a technical seminar during Hannover Messe’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Europe exhibition and conference. Among other announcements, REFIRE was joined by its Hong Kong partner APAS R&amp;D Centre in presenting their off-grid fuel cell EV charging and power project at the Messe. REFIRE Group’s stack division, UNILIA also presented its product line-up covering heavy duty stacks and MEA component manufacturing capability.

PRISMA XXII TO FILL POWER GAP
REFIRE presented its latest heavy-duty fuel cell system, the PRISMA XXII, which delivers up to 220kW in a single integrated system. Implementing the latest in system and stack technology together with a DFM (Design for Manufacturing) approach has enabled improvements in price per kWh when compared with previous generations. This can translate to an overall system cost reduction of up to 30%, thereby contributing to the business case for commercial hydrogen power deployment.

Introducing the new product at a technical seminar, REFIRE Europe Director of Operations Mr Thomas Rösch said: “PRISMA XXII provides higher power in a compact form factor that will be suitable for long range, heavy duty vehicles, as well as marine, rail and stationary power applications. Hydrogen consumption is expected to be class leading. The system has a design life of 30,000h, cold start capability of -30°C, and it can perform at altitudes of up to 3,000m.”
PRISMA XXII also features a 25% improvement in heat rejection which allows the fuel cell system to continue to operate at up to 95°C to deliver rated power during temporarily extreme ambient temperatures.
REFIRE Executive Director Research &amp; Development Centre Mr Yun Liu added that: “PRISMA XXII’s ability to power down from rated power to idling takes just one second, allows regenerated power to contribute up to 5% fuel savings. Various other advancements, such as the use of an expander on the compressor, are helping to reduce TCO (total cost of ownership).”

FUEL CELL-POWERED HEAVY DUTY TRUCKING: THE FUTURE
Together with representatives from Daimler Truck, Bosch, and Faurecia, REFIRE Vice President International Markets Ms Audrey Ma spoke at a panel discussion on the future of heavy-duty fuel cell trucking. She said: “Hydrogen fuel cell-powered heavy-duty trucking is poised to become the killer app of Europe’s decarbonisation efforts”. Ma also added in comments “It is clear now that with policy pushing for clean hydrogen adoption and zero emission transportation services across the EU, hydrogen fuel cell power is a viable way forward”.

DECARBONISING HONG KONG’S ROADS
Also at Hannover Messe, Hong Kong green mobility R&amp;D centre APAS (Automotive Platforms and Application Systems) together with REFIRE, presented Hong Kong&#8217;s first fuel cell-electric vehicle charging prototype and off-grid power unit. Powered by a REFIRE fuel cell system, the 32kW device is a first for the city and represents a milestone in supporting the Hong Kong government’s plans to go carbon neutral by 2050.
APAS R&amp;D Centre General Manager Allan Lai said: “With this project we are demonstrating how Hong Kong can decarbonise mobility using hydrogen-electric charging and power. REFIRE’s products enable a relatively straightforward transition to hydrogen energy for the right use cases. By developing clean mobility and power products such as this EV charger, and by sharing solutions with regulators and industry, we hope that Hong Kong could eventually offer a blueprint for other cities to integrate hydrogen and fuel cell technology into their own energy mix. With all the space limitations and transport complexities, if clean hydrogen energy can be solved in Hong Kong, it can certainly be solved elsewhere.”
APAS R&amp;D Centre was established in 2006 by the Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government. It operates under the auspices of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC).
Industry leader REFIRE is participating for the first time in the 29(th) Hannover Messe which centres on industrial transformation and encourages cross-fertilisation of sectors. It is one of the largest industrial trade fairs in the world welcoming at least 250,000 visitors from around the globe. At the world’s leading hydrogen technology fair, REFIRE joined its worldwide partners to showcase a range of exciting hydrogen fuel cell products and application cases.

REFIRE Vice President, International Markets, Ms Audrey Ma discussed the potential of PRISMA XXII at FC Expo: &#8220;PRISMA XXII will be a special product as it gets customers a big step closer to cost parity with diesel vehicles. PRISMA XXII hydrogen fuel cell system breaks new ground within the existing line-up of products. Its 180kW to 220kW power range output is a major increase from siblings in the PRISMA product line.

REFIRE POWERS SWISS-MADE RACING GRADE FUEL CELL SYSTEM
REFIRE and Swiss fuel cell veteran integrator GreenGT S.A. (GreenGT) jointly presented to launch GreenGT&#8217;s NGT 75 Series of fuel cell systems, powered by REFIRE-supplied, UNILIA-branded ELECTRA stacks. Shortly after its launch in 2021, the stack was awarded the world&#8217;s first Performance Certification from independent testing body TüV Rheinland. To date, over 3,000 UNILIA stacks have been integrated into fuel cell-powered vehicles and power products.
Presenting at the NGT 75 Series launch, Mr Robert Artibise, R&amp;D Vice President of UNILIA under REFIRE GROUP, said: &#8220;The choice of materials enables ELECTRA to be a reliable and compact product that fits the required form factor of GreenGT&#8217;s NGT 75 system series. The precise configuration is tailored to the high specification use cases of GreenGT&#8217;s niche customers&#8221;.

Hong Kong green mobility R&amp;D think tank, APAS (Automotive Platforms and Application Systems) together with REFIRE, unveiled Hong Kong&#8217;s first fuel cell-electric vehicle charging prototype and off-grid power unit. Powered by a REFIRE fuel cell system, the 32kW device is not only a first for the city but represents a milestone supporting the Hong Kong government’s plans to go carbon neutral by 2050.
APAS Deputy Head, Green Transportation, Mr Ralph Xu, and REFIRE Vice President, International Markets, Ms Audrey Ma, unveiled the project together at Tokyo’s FC Expo.
Announcing the project publicly for the first time, Xu said: &#8220;We&#8217;re thrilled to be sharing at FC Expo what we&#8217;ve been working on in Hong Kong for the past two years, as here we are surrounded by global hydrogen technology experts. APAS aims to create technical solutions for smart mobility and green energy. Key to this is to solve current problems relating to storage, refuelling, and the variety of use cases for hydrogen energy in transport and power in one of the densest cities in the world. We want to share these solutions with regulators and industry for faster hydrogen-electric energy adoption&#8221;.
Ma said: &#8220;Even though the project is a proof of concept, it underlines the feasibility of safely deploying hydrogen-electric power in one of the world&#8217;s densest cities. Moreover, it opens up a path to alleviate the problem of land and infrastructure required for charging commercial vehicles between shifts. Hydrogen-electric chargers can now operate fully off-grid&#8221;.

Since its debut in 2021, REFIRE’s 49-tonne FAW heavy-duty tractor has been making waves in intercity logistics. Drivers and fleet operators benefit from the fast refueling time of just 15 minutes and the 300+ kilometre range even when fully loaded. This is made possible by the high energy density and power efficiency of the fuel cell system which is optimised for best performance under anticipated use case conditions.
Ease of operation and simple transfer of driver skills from Diesel to the FAW’s fuel cell powertrain enable this truck to have immediate positive ecological
impact over typical intercity routes.

500+ Dongfeng logistics trucks deployed by REFIRE made up the world’s largest commercial zero carbon hydrogen-powered fleet when they were launched in 2017. Since then, these vehicles have been helping over 20 Chinese e-commerce enterprises to implement green urban logistics across Shanghai and neighbouring cities such as Kunshan, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Changshu, and even as far afield as Yangshan Deepwater Port.

Sprinkler trucks across China are about to be revolutionized with non-polluting drivetrains. Sanitation vehicles typically cleanse city streets during the warmer months, but emissions from conventional diesel models are an unwanted and concentrated atmospheric burden, particularly because of the need for slow operation.
Manufactured by FAW, the 18T sprinkler has been reinvented by REFIRE to incorporate a zero emissions hydrogen-electric powertrain. When hydrogen fuel cells combine hydrogen and fresh air to produce on-demand electric power, the only by-product is pure water. Additionally, the low noise produced by the upgraded vehicles is a valuable benefit to urban residents.
